And why it allowed me to made money while snuggling newborn, selling our house, packing up boxes, and uprooting ours lives! *cue embarrassing happy dance*
Yep, you read that correctly. I worked from my phone while in labor, and was able to secure money for my growing family in the days/weeks after because of it. Then I mostly worked from my phone again as we sold our house and made a move across the country! Today I’m sharing the systems I had in place that made this crazy thing happen!
But first, here’s my cute little girl, Blakely Claire!! Now she is obviously the thing I’m most proud about producing from labor, but as a small business owner what I’m sharing about today is fun too! Now since the title is about money I think it appropriate to tell you that her due date was January 2nd, so everyone was always like, “hoping for her to be born in 2017 for the tax deduction?” And I would always think to myself that that is honestly the last thing I’m thinking about as a uncomfortable pregnant lady, but sure 😂
Now, usually I have a stricter policy about answering emails during big life events, on holidays or on weekends, but when I went in labor I needed ANYTHING to get my mind of the pain while we waited for my midwife to arrive at the hospital. Blakely was also a few days early and I knew since she was going born around prime engagement season this could be hectic because as a wedding photographer some of the best leads we receive are excited brides who are newly engaged and have us on their minds first! Same with our move as I was getting in touch with several 2019 brides as we left NC!
During labor, engagement session inquires had already began rolling in over the weekend and I knew I needed to get our information in the hand of this future brides before I “closed up shop”!
Thankfully, I had several tools in place that allowed all of this to still happen flawlessly even though I would be in the hospital, at home with a new baby, packing boxes, or driving 15 hours away… All of which left me sleep deprived. So here is exactly how I have these systems set up:
When I get an email from a potential client (let’s say a bride) I punch everything into Honeybook. Showit (the platform I used for my website— just switched platforms after our move but still love Showit) is awesome and I got all inquires sent straight to my email AND phone. I just love this when I’m on the go! So all I had to do was go into my email and copy and paste the info into the “new inquiry” section of my Honeybook app.. Here’s a screen shot example of that with my husband as a fake client wedding inquiry below. With Honeybook you can even put a form on your website as well so it collects this and does it automatically, I just had it set up this way because I prefer creating potential leads myself all at once at the end of the day from all sources (Kelly’s referrals, phone messages/calls, email, Facebook, and IG)!
After doing that I have a new project open with the name, email and date of the event for my client. I scrolled down to show you that it will also show me my schedule for that day so I can check that nothing I’ve already booked is conflicting with this new event! (For the fake inquiry it’s showing me a real wedding is booked that day… and also CINCO DE MAYO!) 🎉
Once the client is added to their own project within HB this is how I approach replying to the email:
First, I use an email template I received from Katelyn’s workshop as my base. You can easily grab all her emails templates online. These templates are saved within HB so I can access them easily on the computer or app!
I then attach my pricing guide PDF!
I love HB’s brochures and still send them for portraits and mentoring because they are incredible and easy to change up throughout the year, but last year I bought KJ’s pricing guide to customize and I now send these out for weddings. This pretty magazine is also saved within HB and easy to access at home or on the go, just like my email templates!
Like I mentioned above, tool that powered me to be able to keep communicating to my clients during these big transitions is Honeybook! Now, they are awesome for a few reasons. The main one is because they are partnered with the Rising Tide Society, which is the organization that made our Hickory Tuesday’s Together group possible. They are also amazing because their system can make it easy for me to “work” for a few minutes while in labor, while moving, or one minute while homeschooling Tristan haha!! And the final reason they rock is because they are giving all my blog readers 50% OFF their first year of Honeybook— that’s not just for the annual subscription either you can get 50% off the monthly subscription as well! Click HERE to sign up and get those savings!!
Now I need to give a shoutout my biggest source of support that made this all possible, Kyle. He encourages me reach these crazy goals I set always— whether it’s is caring for more clients, homeschooling or pushing during labor haha!
I hope this is helpful! If you are interested, I could do a blog post next month of how I continue to use Honeybook after a client is booked to spend less time working on the backend and more time with these babies– just let me know if that’s of interest to you!!
Have a great day!
